May Day: What Hope For Nigerian Workers?

Immigration-Applicants

It’s another Workers day and Nigerian workers join millions of workers all over the world except the United States of America to mark 128th anniversary of May Day. On this day, we decide to look at the difference between the average worker and the trade union. What are the challenges for the average worker? It’s a special May Day Edition. Only in Vanguard.

FOR the average worker in Nigeria, a lot has happened between the last May Day and now. Issues of insecurity of lives and property, uncertainty of jobs, unemployment, and the effects of an ailing economy are some of the issues which the Nigerian worker had to contend with in the last one year.

The challenges notwithstanding, thousands of workers will be at several venues for rallies organized by their trade unions and the labour centres. However, it would appear that some are not impressed by these rallies.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos addresing workers at the Workers Day celebration held in Lagos on Monday.

*File photo: Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos addressing workers at the Workers Day celebration.

The Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights ( CDWR) said of the rallies, “. Unfortunately, May Day celebration is largely characterized by jamborees and partying rather than sober reflection of the appalling and worsening condition of the working class. We shall see display of company names and brands just for promotional values in addition to speeches from trade union leaders that lack a clear path to political and economic emancipation of the workers and the masses”.

The views of CDWR signed by its publicity secretary, Chinedu Bosah are similar to those of Joint Action Front; another pro-labour Non- Governmental Organization, the Joint Action Front..

JAF stated “Our reflection on the state of the trade union movement in Nigeria revealed that Nigerian workers over the years have been weakened organizationally and ideologically by the anti-worker policies of global neo-liberalism. This has been responsible for the reduction in the numerical strength of the unions, attacks on jobs, indecent work conditions and environment, poor and slave wages and violations of workers’ rights as guaranteed by local and international labour instruments”.

JAF in its response to our enquiries endorsed by its chairman, Dr. Oladipo Fashina and General Secretary, Abiodun Aremu noted “ that the leadership of Nigerian trade unions across board have not lived up to the expectations of the Nigerian working people in organizing against the inimical policies of the neo-liberal policies of privatization, deregulation, casualisation, contract staffing, etc”.

CDWR on its part stated,

“ In celebrating the 2014 May Day, the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) should shift its focus to workplace conditions and work out clear-cut programmes on how to challenge all anti-labour practices taking place in all workplaces and establishments”

The NGO suggested, “ This should include mass mobilization and sensitization of workers and the public for a sustained struggle to win more concessions for workers. Rank and file workers have to put more pressure on the trade union leaders as a means of engaging employers of labour”.

The Joint Action Front listed critical challenges before the trade unions” and this include,

“The need for a renewed commitment to the ideological and political education development of the rank and file workers in the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

*A trade union movement that should be committed to organizing the unemployed and the informal sector workers.

*A trade union movement with an agenda for the unemployed and social security, Decent Work and living wage and that should ensure that employers and Government implement collective agreements reached with workers. *A trade union movement committed to struggle to ensure that Agreements reached with the polytechnic and colleges of education striking workers 9 ASUP, SSANIP and COEASU) and the entailments due to the pensioners are implemented soonest.

*A trade union movement that will be committed to provide leadership for a nationwide struggle against the policies of privatization and deregulation and for full industrialization drive that could ensure massive employment and expansion of infrastructure.

*A trade union movement prepared to work with its main partner in the civil society – JAF – under the platform of Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) towards the emergence of a genuine mass party of the working class and the poor as the political alternative to the political parties of the ruling class of exploiters.

The CDWR insists that “ trade union leaders are doing little or nothing at unionizing and organizing defenseless workers in many workplaces who are in dire need of a union platform to defend their interest. Cases abound of union leaders who betray workers struggle or do little to defend workers rights and interests.

A whole lot of anti-labour policies abound in workplaces that are left unchallenged. Casualisation and contract staffing is replacing secured employment in many workplaces including the public sector”.

It noted that the national minimum wage is yet to be implemented in many states and organized labour seems helpless”. Though, the tempo of labour’s activities has drastically declined, it has a history to be proud off.

Nigerian workers need to be vigilant and participate actively in the next election of the NLC scheduled to hold in February next year so as to elect leaders they can be proud off.

Will President Goodluck Jonathan Go To Sambisa Forest?

Goodluck-Jonathan-2-36NG

Since Sambisa forest has been revealed to be the major basis for Boko Haram’s insurgent operations, it is indeed pertinent to ask if President Goodluck Jonathan, the armed forces over which he presides as Commander-in-Chief, and other security agencies, will go after the terrorists that abducted more than 200 teenage girls into their hideout in Sambisa Forest, in Borno State.

That question can be posed in another way: Can President Goodluck Jonathan go into Sambisa Forest? The point is that the question of willingness is closely allied to that of capability. But before one goes on to look at the issue of capability, it is important first to settle that of willingness because that is at the very heart of President Jonathan’s administration’s strategy towards prosecuting our own battle against terror.

From the very beginning when the terror insurgents resurfaced during his administration, President Jonathan had showed himself incapable of rising to the challenge. He lacked the will to take on the terrorists and failed to exercise the power invested in him as president to bring the terrorists to their knee. He was all too tentative, in turns weak and vacillating on what to do.

Even though what he needed to do was clear –crush the rising revolt with one firm and determined blow and thereafter take the initiative from the terrorists- he was clearly unprepared for it. More so, as the Northern oligarchy that lost the election that brought him into office were yet breathing fire and speaking from both sides of the mouth about the dangers posed by the terrorists. It’s no wonder today that he is effusive in his gratitude and showering of praise on Mohammadu Buhari for his belated condemnation of the terrorists.

But lacking both the decision and the decisiveness to act, the President went about making virtue of his weakness by saying he wanted to respect the law and avoid the mistakes of Odi and Zaki Biam. But the criminalities that prompted the military outrage of Odi or Zaki Biam were not the handiwork of terrorists. Yet, Jonathan blossomed in weakness and continues today to luxuriate under the delusion of respecting the rights of beasts who are neither human nor respectful of the minimum standards of human relations. He dithered way too long in the pit latrine that flies now swarm around him.

He allowed the sore of intermittent outbursts of hoodlums to fester into the cancer of routine terrorism with international dimensions. Now Nigerians wonder how things got to this point where terror has taken over our land, where school children are shot on their way to sit public examinations and hundreds of teenage school girls are rounded up in their hostels and herded into forests within national territorial spaces known to the ruling authorities. The impunity of terror is spreading fast as was reported in parts of Mushin in Lagos where rival criminal gangs terrorised, robbed and raped residents for many hours without a whimper from the police.

Which brings me back to my earlier question- Will Jonathan go into Sambisa Forest, will he, can he effectively deploy the apparatus of state power to take on the terrorists? For his initial lack of initiative, he now has a tough row to hoe. His job has been compounded and he cannot and must not expect any relief any time soon- not when his thoughts are wholly directed at retaining his tenancy at Aso Villa.

His strategy against terror, if he has any, has become too routine to be effective just as the battle his poorly motivated, battle-weary military pretended to be waging against the terrorists has been too much prolonged. You don’t have to be Hannibal, heard of Napoleon, read Sun Tzu or fought alongside Shaka to know nothing good can come out of it. It is a non-starter of a battle. We need not confer the grandeur of war on these boys scout-like skirmishes yet. So let nobody call this a war on terror.

The postponed meeting between the President and the state governors last week confirmed the routing bog into which the response to the reign of terror has fallen into. The much anticipated meeting was an anti-climax as all that came out of it was the same call on the military and the security agencies to work to rescue the abducted school girls. Wonder what comfort this would be to their traumatized families.

This confirms my suspicion that the military, personified by Goodluck Jonathan, is not ready for Sambisa. Or they wouldn’t make false military claim on the rescue of the school children or, in fact, got the actual figures of the abducted wrong while going on with their jaded promises of ensuring the end of terror.

Although by their initial silence on, justification of and covert accommodation of the activities of the terrorists, the Northern oligarchy stands complicit in nurturing them, not minding the blame-trading, unreflective letter of Murtala Nyako who appeared to have been sleeping while terrorists prowled his territory. But by playing footsie with them when he ought to have sent hot lead into their midst and scattered them into the winds, Jonathan can neither escape blame nor responsibility for the terrorists gaining ground. So entrenched are they now that their enclave in the forest of Sambisa is a no-go area for even the military. The President until recently kept far from the terror zones in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa and even travellers in far-flung places like Lagos and Ibadan are now held by the terror of insurgent attacks as was the case a few days ago. This is pure madness, where people can no longer see order or feel the protection of state power.

The terrorists have been lionised beyond measure, their capacity given mythical proportions. Sambisa is now the metaphor of the forbidden, of the criminalities of the Nigerian society writ large. Nigeria does have a huge fight ahead of it. Large sections of our society are being brutalized. The enslavement -and I use that word deliberately- of over 200 teenage girls in the 21st century in their fatherland by criminals whose hideout is well-known routs whatever anyone can imagine. We now have 234 more potential terrorists on our hand and for no fault of theirs!

The trauma of such enslavement may never be healed. The exploitation that must go with this enslavement is painful to imagine. That the parents of these hapless youths are alive to witness this and powerless to act is beyond words. The shame is not theirs but of a people that would allow it. We are all held in Sambisa until the terrorists are destroyed. As a metaphor of our failures and challenges many are the Sambisa and Soka forests in which Nigerians are bound. There is the Sambisa of corruption, the Soka of misappropriation, of dereliction of duty and, above all, inept leadership.

Culled from Vanguard.

Boko Haram takes abducted schoolgirls to Chad, Cameroon; marries them off for N2,000 | Reports

boko-haram-logo.jpeg

Most of the 234 Borno schoolgirls in Boko Haram captivity have been ferried abroad to Chad and Cameroon after they were married off to sect members on N2,000 bride price each, an elder told Daily Trust yesterday.

The female students were taken from their hostels at the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok on the night of April 14.

About 40 had escaped in the days after the incident, but parents and school authorities said at least 234 of them were yet to be found.

Dr. Pogu Chibok, who is the leader of the Chibok Elders Forum, told Daily Trust yesterday that latest information available to them indicates that most of the girls have been taken to the neighboring Cameroon and Chad by their captors.

He said before they were ferried in canoes across the Lake Chad, a wedding ceremony was conducted at a town on the border with Cameroon where they were married off to Boko Haram militants.

He said N2,000 was paid as bride price on each of the girls to the specific Boko Haram members who took them from their school and who had assumed “ownership” of the students.

“They ferried them in canoes to Cameroon and Chad republic after they were wedded off to Boko Haram members who bidded (sic) and paid N2,000 each as dowries on their heads,” Bitrus said.

“The dowry was paid to their captors, the very people who abducted them from their school. One of them who married one of the girls took her to a border town close to Cameroon where villagers saw her.”

Following their abduction, the schoolgirls were thought to be first taken to the Boko Haram camps in the notorious Sambisa Forest. Reports later said villagers had seen the girls being conveyed in trucks to other locations.

Bitrus said yesterday: “So many sources have informed us that the girls have been taken to Cameroon. Many villagers said they saw the girls being transported in trucks and then in canoes.

“On Sunday they were taken to Dikwa area where they (Boko Haram) have a camp there. From there they took them to Marte, then Monguno before they were finally ferried in canoes. It was yesterday we got this latest report of them being married off to the insurgents by their captors.”

He said sources in Cameroon told them that most of the girls were now being held at “an area where the Boko Haram operates in Cameroon.”

‘Crying day and night’

On whether military authorities were informed about the movements of the girls, Bitrus said: “The military was alerted on Tuesday about two weeks ago when some villagers saw many of the girls being transported in trucks, some with even their school uniforms. The villagers tried calling the senator representing the zone but they couldn’t get him so they went to Bama barracks where they reported the matter.

“At the Bama barracks they were told that they must put it in writing, that that is the military tradition. At that time if the military had intervened they would have stopped them from reaching their destination.

“And the fact that for nearly two weeks we have been talking about this and nothing is being done, then there are questions we have to ask. Nobody did anything.”

Bitrus sobbed as he spoke to our reporter yesterday.

“What is happening with the Nigerian nation? I think we demand some answers. Today it is happening to these unfortunate girls from Chibok, tomorrow it may be somewhere else and that is why all Nigerians must rally around us on this,” he said.

“If these captors are trying to achieve a political point, I think the best thing is for us to try to make sure that they don’t succeed but from all indications they are succeeding due to inaction of government. It is helping these people in achieving their objectives.”

Earlier yesterday, Bitrus spoke to the BBC Hausa radio saying “parents of these girls have been angry that despite the existence of government, there has not been concrete effort from government on the matter.

“Female parents have been crying day and night, because nobody knows what government is doing about the whole issue. All that we read in the papers is that Nigerian Army have done this or that.”

When contacted over claims that the military was informed of the movement of the schoolgirls, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, told Daily Trust: “The concern and anxiety from all quarters is quite understandable.

Please be assured that as much as the forces may not disclose details of action being taken to secure the freedom of the girls, every information received on the subject is duly analyzed and acted upon as necessary.

“No information is being ignored in the concerted effort to ensure the safety and freedom of the girls. Just pray for the successful outcome of all efforts please.”

Borno Youths Storm Gov. Fashola’s Office Over Abducted Chibok Girls

Governor-Fashola.jpeg

The abduction of the Chibok girls has gotten even more serious and has brought about attention from all around. Latest of which are

youths, under the agess of Kibaku Youth Association of Nigeria, KYAN, yesterday, stormed the office of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State to protest the continued abduction of 234 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok Local Government, Borno State by the Boko Haram insurgents and called for their immediate release.

Here’s what Vanguard reports;

It will be recalled that about three weeks ago 234 female students were initially abducted by the Boko Haram group and taken to the dreadful Sambisa Forest, Borno State, while some escaped in the process.

The aggrieved indigenes of Chibok council, Borno State living in Lagos, stormed Lagos House, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, to condemn the abduction of the innocent students after attacking their school in Chibok community.

The protesters, clad in black attire to express their concern over the abduction of the girls, and called on the Federal Government, state governors and the military in the country to get the girls released forthwith as well as end the insurgency immediately.

The protesters displayed placards with different inscriptions, such as: “Education is not a crime, we want our girls back; Bring our sisters; Where are our sisters; Bring back our girls; hear our cries; we love our siblings; 234 innocent lives is too much to ignore; Rescue the 234 Chibok girls now and others.”

The leader of the youths, Mr. Moses Zakwa explained: “Though we are in Lagos enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the state, however, our hearts bleed over this tragedy that has befallen these innocent young girls whom are our sisters, cousins, mothers of the unborn generation and future leaders of the country.”

Addressing the protesters, Fashola said; “Your coming here today shows sense of brotherhood and passion for your fellow human being especially children and the Lagos state government is also concerned about the abduction of these girls.

“We are really shock as to the resort to the abduction of innocent young children in our country. Whatever grievances the abductors have, hostage taking is dehumanising.”

Alison-Madueke Gets Interim Injunction Stopping Reps From Probing N10billion Jet Scandal

diezani jet

Nigeria’s embattled petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has secured an interim court injunction ordering the House of Representatives to discontinue an ongoing investigation of how the minister allegedly squandered more than N10billion of public funds leasing private jets for two years.

The House Committee on Public Accounts investigating the expenditure was set to conduct a public hearing on Monday, but it was stalled by an Abuja Federal High Court order.

Alison- Madueke and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation listed the National Assembly and the House of Representatives as the defendants in the suit with reference number FHC/ABJ/CS/295/2014 and dated April 11, 2014.

It was gathered that a “surprised” Tambuwal was served the restraining order on Monday morning.

“This has never happened before in this country that a serving minister is asking a court to stop the parliament from doing its work,” a committee source told a source on Monday.

“These are indeed, no ordinary times. I am seriously disturbed about the way we want to run this country”, he added.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, confirmed the development to journalists.

“The court processes were served on us today (Monday); the speaker has been served.

“Simply put, it is to notify us that, this matter which you want to investigate, we have gone to court”, Mohammed stated.

Mohammed described Alison-Madueke’s action as a “temporary setback”? for the House, but assured the public that the legislature would fight to the finish.

According to him, being a “law-abiding House”, the first reaction was to put the hearing on hold until legal opinions were sought.

He spoke further, “We expected the minister to be here today(Monday) for the hearing.

“Instead, we have been served with court processes. As law-abiding citizens, we have decided to wait. We will tarry awhile, take some legal opinions and move on from there.

“What has happened tells you the kind of frustration that the House is facing. A matter of public importance is under investigation and a minister is telling us that she has gone to court.

“However, our job is to expose corruption. We will study the court papers and take it up from there.”

The PAC Chairman, Mr. Solomon Olamilekan, expressed shock over the minister’s decision to “rush to court.”

He asked, “Is this to say there is something to hide? What was she afraid of that she went to court?

“The restraining order was served on the Office of the Speaker, stopping us from going ahead with the investigation.

“As a committee, we have not seen a copy, but since the speaker was served, we cannot pretend not to be aware.”

It was gathered that, while the original mandate of the committee was to investigate the alleged N10bn expenditure on the Challenger 850, the committee stumbled on additional information indicating that Alison-Madueke chartered two other jets.

One of them, a Global Express XRS, was said to have cost €600,000 in a return charter trip to London.

Olamilekan claimed that all was set for the probe on Monday (yesterday) only for members to be confronted with the news on the court order.

He stated that two aviation firms, Visa Jets and Jet Hanger, had already made submissions to the committee.

On the part of the NNPC, Olamilekan said the committee received a letter from the corporation asking for an extension of the deadline.

However, he admitted that, with the minister’s decision to go to court, the committee had been compelled to await the outcome of the court processes.

But, findings revealed that the committee members were in a dilemma long before the court order reached the House on Monday.

Alison-Madueke had twice failed to respond to letters the committee wrote, asking her to state her side of the allegation preparatory to the public hearing.

A further directive to make the submissions before April 28, was again ignored.

When contacted on Monday, an official at the Petroleum ministry, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the subject, said, “I can confirm to you that there has been some leads as to why the minister decided to stop answering the House.

“In fact, the court order is one of such leads and it has restrained the House from probing her.”

Another official said the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Andrew Yakubu, and the minister decided not to honour the House panel’s request “because they’ve been very busy lately.

“The minister is a very busy woman, so also is the GMD. They can’t be answering to every call at the detriment of their duties at the ministry and the NNPC and we hope that with this court order, these things will be adequately addressed.”

The FHC will on Tuesday (Tuesday) begin hearing in the suit by the minister and the NNPC.

In the suit, they asked the FHC for an order of interim injunction restraining the respondents “whether by themselves, their members, committees or agents from summoning or directing” their appearance “before any committee, particularly the PAC set up by the House of Representatives” to conduct the investigation.

They also want the court to stop the committee from asking any official of the ministry or the NNPC to produce any papers, notes or other documents or give any evidence in line with a letter from the House dated March 26, 2014, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

In the same vein, they asked for an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants from issuing a warrant to compel the minister’s attendance, or the attendance of any official of the ministry or the NNPC, with regard to the investigation.

In the alternative, the plaintiffs want the court to make an order of status quo, directing the parties to maintain the current position with regard to the investigation, as of the date of filing of the suit.

The court order which was made available to our correspondent, indicated that after hearing an ex parte motion moved by Alison-Madueke’s counsel, Etigwe Uwa (SAN), Justice Ahmed Mohammed made an order directing the defendants to appear before the court to show cause why the interim orders sought by the plaintiffs should not be made by the court.

Starting immediately, 140 of the 170 countries where the business thrives will be migrated from the free service to a 14-day free trial of the iROKOtv access to over 10,000 hours of Nollywood content with no ads. The other 30 would be migrated as well eventually.

As Jason himself admits in the post, the shift from the ad-based model to a subscription based model overnight is quite dramatic, but from the business side of things, the customer conversions are significant, iROKOtv as a company would be loads better in terms of revenue.

Rihanna Gives The Finger [Rubber] Courtside At Brooklyn Nets Game

Rihanna

Rihanna is definitely living up to her BAD girl reputation if you ask us.

RiRi supported the Brooklyn Nets Friday (April 25) night as she showed off a one-up rubber.

Rihanna’s no stranger to having a good time and by the looks of her BFF Melissa’s face, a weird, good time was definitely being had. Check out the look on the guys behind them. Clearly, they enjoyed watching Rihanna goof off as well.

“Caption thi$……,” she urged her nearly 13 million followers on Instagram. As one might assume, there have been some quite vulgar responses.

BBC Reports That Abducted Borno School Girls Were Spotted In Military Coloured Vehicles Around Gwoza

Kidnapped-Girls

Here’s what BBC is reporting about the abducted school girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram.

A resident of the small town of Gwoza in the remote north-east said on 25 April she saw a convoy of 11 vehicles painted in military colours carrying many girls.

This will be of little comfort to the parents as it suggests at least some are now even further from home, close to the Cameroonian border.

The fact that Islamist fighters from the Boko Haram group are still able to move across parts of Borno state in convoys points to the severe limitations of the current military strategy.

The attack is an eerie echo of a mass abduction in northern Uganda back in 1996. A total of 139 girls aged between 11 and 16 were seized from dormitories at St Mary’s School in Aboke.

They were tied together with rope and were taken away by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), which says it is fighting for a state based on the Biblical 10 Commandments. So, same terror tactics, different religion.

In an extraordinary act of bravery the headmistress, Sister Rachele Fassera, followed them into the bush and managed to rescue 109 of them.

The rest were forced to become so-called wives of the rebel commanders. Most of the “Aboke Girls” escaped and returned years later as young mothers. But at least four of them never came home.

In Nigeria there was such utter confusion and terror after the attack on Chibok School that several days later it was still not clear how many girls were missing.

A solider told BBC

“We are in a difficult situation. We are underequipped we do not have the required weapons,.”You cannot confront someone with more sophisticated weapons than you. It is not our superiors doing the fighting – we are the ones at the front line,.

This problem is not from us at the front line but from our superiors. We, the soldiers, have the courage to confront Boko Haram but we do not have sufficient weapons.”

“So we have to consider our families our parents and when we go there and get killed, what becomes of our families?”

There cannot be many countries where the political leaders stay as silent following such a tragedy. So far, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has said more about the Chibok attack than Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan.

TB Joshua Reveals Prophecy About The 200 Chibok-Borno Abducted Girls

Prophet-TB-Joshua

Prophet of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, T.B. Joshua, proclaimed to his congregation on Sunday 27th April, 2014, that the abducted schoolgirls in Borno State were on the verge of being released by ‘God’, adding that almost half had already escaped their kidnappers clutches and on their way to freedom already.

Amid mounting public fury and an international outcry over the fate of the over 200 kidnapped teenage girls – now missing for nearly 2weeks – TB Joshua declared: “They have to be released. That is the voice of God!”

He described a revelation he said God showed him:

“I saw a vision where some of these girls have escaped and they are trying to find their way from the forest to the town. God has spoken – these children must be released. We can’t wait to see them.”

In a message broadcast live via his widely viewed station Emmanuel TV and posted on his official Facebook page followed by close to 1,000,000 people, he counseled the girl’s parents to know that people felt their pain. “It is not your battle alone but the battle of all people of God all over the world. They are also our children.”

TB Joshua warned security forces involved in rescue efforts to be careful not to be drawn into unnecessary confrontation. “God has promised all of them will come out free, without harm and hurt. However, if there is unnecessary confrontation, it may affect them,” the pastor, whose recent YouTube clip showing a prophecy of the ill-fated MH370 plane went viral and garnered international media attention, cautioned.

“let us be prayerful and at the same time be tactical and strategic, so they will not harm our dear schoolgirls. Their captors are in a place where they cannot move forward or backwards. Confrontation is dangerous.”
