Tragedy struck in Mexico as a Mayor of a city south of Mexico’s capital was assassinated one day after taking office. According to the government of Morelos state, the Mayor named, Gisela Mota was killed at her residence, when gunmen fired sporadic shots at her house.
Jesus Alberto Capella who is the Morelos state security commissioner said two of the gunmen were killed and three others detained for questioning.
The Governor of Morelos state, Graco Ramirez said the assassination was an organized with no indication of the involvement of a drug cartel. In recent time, cartels have targeted local officials so as to create an enabling environment for the smooth running of their shady business.
“a strong and brave woman who on taking office as mayor, declared that her fight against crime would be frontal and direct.” Gisela Mota’s party, Democratic Revolution Party said in its statement.
Mota took charge on New Year’s day after her swearing in and was shot dead barely 24 hours later. Governor Graco Ramirez said there “would be no impunity” in her assassination and that the officials of the state would not give in to what he described as “challenge from criminals.”
