Welcome to another long season of football, hopefully an exciting one, Asimolowo Abimbola is still the name, been a while I did this, and like we did last season you all are welcome to always comment, chat, talk about the articles and season games, let’s have fun together “again”
Let’s get straight to it; I’ll be talking about a few matters from last season and also my thoughts on the coming season;
- Last season as a whole
- The summer business
- My Thoughts on the coming season.
We all saw how the Arsenal grew during the 2014/2015 season for Arsenal, so many positives and few negatives too, from the first game against Palace I saw and said Wenger was going for a different style of play for the season and he did, took a while to get going but they eventually did, which took the team on a 10 match unbeaten streak which started from the fine win against Manchester City at the Etihad. The signing of Alexis Sanchez was a big big one, The fans give a big thumbs to Barcelona for that one.
Santi Cazorla, David Ospina, Francis Coquelin were very much involved and excellent last season, even though the team lacked upfront, goals were shared again among players, Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud just couldn’t pull in enough, between them 18 goals in the league, so poor.
It was said Arsene Wenger would solve the obvious DM problem evident from the 13/14 season, which was still a worry until late November when he recalled Coquelin from his loan move, Arsenal fans will call that the biggest play of the season, because he came in and steadied the ship, that fine link/figure between the defence and midfield, gave the creative players like Santi and the rest the freedom they needed. Arsenal finished the season 3rd and retained the FA cup (a record 12th time), which shows improvement but in my opinion, the champions league second round loss was a disaster, a big one, and that is where I think Arsenal should focus on making an impact this season.
Coming into a new season as an Arsenal fan is always the most frustrating feeling, the transfer window, the press, the unending links, rumors, the star player sales, the slow movement by Wenger in the window but this season the aim was clear: keep the core, bring in a GK, DM and maybe a striker (which I never think will happen). Arsenal quickly wrapped up the signing of Petr Cech from Chelsea, an absolute world class player, he was part of the winning defence for Chelsea for many years, let’s not forget John Terry was the major figure for most of those years but Cech is an excellent presence for the Gunners and I know players like Bellerin and Per will benefit.
I know Arsenals fans still hope for a defensive midfield and striker signing but with news in recent weeks I think just one will come in, Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta signed new deals which most likely means no DM signing but with rumors of Flamini heading to Turkey, who knows. On the striker solution, I’ve said this many times, it’s hard to win the league title without a top striker that racks in at least 20goals a season in the league alone and the sad truth is Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck might never be that force for the Gunners, not to mention they will have injuries, so a major signing is needed, the only name in the hat is/has been Karim Benzema but he’s partially not available, I sense the same that occurred with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil signings might happen again, Real Madrid brings in someone then Wenger goes for Benzema but isn’t that just hoping.
The Emirates cup is next, then the charity shield against Chelsea, if you ask me, presently Arsenal have a good side, a better side but not the title winning side but if they carry the momentum and spirit from last season then yes they can go all the way, uts all about consistency, Francis Coquelin will get better(I still think he shouldn’t be the main starting DM ), Cech will make things easier, more competitions for places around the team, another FA final is highly possible and surely the usual top 4 but what I think Weger should focus on is the champions league as I have said before, apart from the fact that the UCL seedings have changed and coefficients matter now more than ever, its make or break, no QF appearance in 7years which is poor for a side like Arsenal.
