#TBT: Evergreen and Classic Nigerian Songs To Be Remembered

Hello Readers… It’s throwback Thursday! Over the decades, Nigerian music has grown from just normal local jams to songs receiving international recognition by worldwide recognized images. Despite this development, there are some classic songs that are meant to last a lifetime. Such songs, in spite of them being produced ages ago, still grace our stereos like newly produced jams. As a true Nigerian, if you can’t sing along when these songs are being played, you should cover your face. Here are some of those songs…

1. African Queen by 2face (2004)– This has to be one of the greatest classic songs. Believe me when I say our grandchildren would still bump to this song twenty decades to come. It’s a Love song that has a very deep and romantic message. This jam is popular than himself.

2.  Oruka by Sunny Neji (2003)– Oruka ti Dowo na!  Every  generation needs its classics as they form a legacy for future generations. “Oruka”(wedding band) is one such song, which can be referred to as a timeless classic as it has become the theme wedding song in Nigeria and several African countries.

3.  Diana by Daddy Showkey (1999)- Daddy Showkey aka “Galala King” was the first artist to start the Nigerian Dancehall style.In 1999, he dropped “Ghetto Soldier” which earned him countless awards and laurels. The biggest reason for this was his juggernaut hit “Diana” which everyone fell in love with.

4.  Mr Lecturer by Eedris Abdulkareem(2002) – This track gathered so much buzz that it sealed his status as one of hip-hop’s most revered acts in Nigeria as far back as the year 2002. Eedris is still considered by many as the king of hip-hop and pioneer of rap in Nigeria.

5.  Why Me by D’banj(2006) – Kokomaster D’Banj is one of Nigeria’s biggest music celebrity thanks to songs like Why Me, Tongolo, Soco and the likes.

6.  Konko Below by Lagbaja (2001)- PA DE MI NI SA LE! One thing that links African music together is the use of traditional African drums and this man incorporated it into his songs. The ensemble of drummers constitute the larger part of the band. Vocalists and western instrumentalists make up the rest. Lagbaja’s groovy fusion has been referred to as afrojazz, afrobeat, highlife and afropop until now.

7.  Yahozee by  Olu Maintain Ft LKT- (2006)-Yahoo o.o.!  The massive track “Yahooze” was a runaway hit and was well received by the Nigerian public. It brought out of the classic dance moves of all time.

8. Gongo Aso by 9ice(2008)- 9ice launched himself to the Nigerian music scene with his Yoruba infused lyrics. Gongo Aso was a cornerstone of his career. Gongo Aso became the title of his second album. In that effort, 9ice recorded songs covering success, originality , partying and women.

9.  Senorita by P-square (2003)- Senorita is the debut single by. P-Square, it features a music video directed by Jude Engees Okoye. The song received the most airplay from the album and showcased the duo’s dancing skills. They are well known for their Michael Jackson- inspired dance steps.  n

10.  Not the Girl by Carey Art Alade (2009)The smash hit ballad “Not The Girl,” which has been nominated for several awards and won video of the year at the 2009 Nigerian Entertainment Awards held in Washington DC is another classic track by Carey Art Alade. This song received many international recognitions.
