Academic staff union of polytechnics strikes for a week

Dr Chika Ugonwa ASUP’s South South and South East coordinator announced at a press conference yesterday that the Union will strike for a week beggining today January 30th.
The strike according to him is a result of the lack of commitment by the federal government to improve polytechnic education in Nigeria.This unwillingness by the goverment is reflected in the unwillingness to review the Polytechnic Act which currently promotes ;

  • Victimizes union officials
  • Non release of Union check-off dues
  • Undue interference in union activities
  • Poor funding of polytechnics
  • Non release of CONTISS 25 migration arrears.
  • Frustration of resolutions of meeting of council on establishments.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is insensitive to our plight. After this warning strike, the Federal Government will be left with two options, either to close down the system or redeem it from total collapse. This manifested in poor funding, discriminatory practices,  decayed infrastructure, weak and obsolete legal and regulatory regimes, wanton and wilful breach of agreements as well as serial and sustained cases of impunity in the sector.”Ogonwa said
